Buying shower gel online means you cannot open the cap and smell it. That turns out to be a good thing, because scent is the least useful way to judge a shower gel. Here is what to look at instead, so that what arrives is what your skin actually needs.
1. Read the ingredient list, not the front label
The front of the bottle sells; the back tells you what you are buying. Two things matter most.
- The cleansing base. Gentle surfactants clean without stripping. Heavy sulphate bases lather dramatically but leave skin tight. If the list is long and chemical, be cautious.
- The active ingredient. If a gel claims to do something, antibacterial, soothing, deodorising, there should be an ingredient that does it. Tea tree oil is antibacterial and antifungal. Eucalyptus cools and soothes. Rose essence is calming. A gel that claims "antibacterial" without an antibacterial ingredient is just scent.
Our Tea Tree Shower Gel lists tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils over a gentle cleansing base. That is the whole formula.
2. Match the gel to a problem, not a mood
Ask what you want it to fix. Body odour that returns by mid-afternoon, itchy skin, athlete's foot or a sweaty back all point to an antibacterial, antifungal gel. Skin that stings or goes red points to something gentle and lightly fragranced. If you are not sure, our guide to the best shower gel for all skin types walks through it.
3. Check the reviews for your problem specifically
A star rating tells you little on its own. Read the reviews that mention what you are buying for. A tea tree gel with hundreds of reviews mentioning odour and athlete's foot tells you more than a five-star average ever could. Our tea tree gel has more than 900 reviews, and the recurring words are odour, fresh and itch.
4. Look at the size and the price per 100ml
Shower gel is a repeat purchase, so the per-bottle price matters less than what you pay over a year. A 250ml bottle lasts most people four to six weeks of daily use. Twin packs usually cost less per bottle: our Tea Tree Shower Gel twin pack is £21.99 for two 250ml bottles against £11.99 for one, and the British Rose twin pack is £14 for two.
5. Check where it is made and how
"Made in the UK" matters for two reasons: the product is subject to UK cosmetic safety regulation, and it has not spent weeks in a shipping container. Vegan and cruelty-free are worth confirming too, since they are not the default. Everything in our shower gel range is made in the UK, vegan and cruelty-free.
6. Read the small print on delivery and returns
Because you cannot try before you buy, the returns policy is part of the product. Check the free-delivery threshold, how returns work and whether there is a guarantee. We offer free UK delivery on orders over £25 and a no-quibble money-back guarantee, so a first order carries no risk.
A short checklist
- Does the ingredient list back up the claim on the front?
- Is there an active ingredient for the problem I have?
- Do the reviews mention my problem?
- What is the price per 100ml, and is there a multipack?
- Made where, and is it vegan and cruelty-free?
- What happens if I do not like it?
Run any shower gel through those six and you will rarely be disappointed by what turns up in the post. If you want to start somewhere, the tea tree gel for problem skin or the rose gel for everyday use are the two we would point you to.
